What's the best neighborhood in Paris? Honestly, there isn't just one. It all depends on what you're looking for: going out, relaxing somewhere quiet, shopping, or finding the old postcard Paris. Each neighborhood has its own personality, and that's exactly what makes the city so charming.
Here's my rundown of the neighborhoods I love most, with what each one is worth and who it's for. Fair warning: it's very subjective, and I definitely have my favorites.
Saint Germain des Prés (6th)
As a real Parisian, Saint Germain des Prés is my favorite neighborhood, no contest. On the left bank, in the 6th, it's chic and full of life at the same time, young and lively. You'll find the legendary cafés (Les Deux Magots, Café de Flore), the art galleries, the beautiful shops, and lots of little streets that are lovely to wander. It's literary, elegant Paris, but with energy.
What I love is the balance: you can have a quiet coffee in the morning, shop in the afternoon and end the night in a nice bar, all in gorgeous surroundings. For a first visit or to live there, it's a neighborhood where you really feel like you're in Paris.
Le Marais (3rd and 4th)
Le Marais is the most bobo and the most Parisian neighborhood at once. Super lively, full of cute little shops, concept stores and galleries, with its medieval lanes and beautiful old mansions. Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris, is gorgeous, and rue des Rosiers is worth the detour for its history and its falafel.
It's a neighborhood that never really sleeps: cafés, restaurants, bars, there's always a crowd outside. If you like a lively vibe and shopping that's a bit different, you'll love it. For food, Café des Musées is one of my go to spots around here.
Montmartre (18th)
Montmartre is probably the prettiest neighborhood in Paris when it comes to postcard charm. Old Paris, the little cobbled streets, the hill, and Sacré Cœur right at the top with its view over the whole city. It's beautiful, truly.
The downside is that it's the tourists' favorite. So some parts, like Place du Tertre or the area around Sacré Cœur, get very crowded and a bit of a tourist trap. My advice: the best move is to get away from the main spots to find the real charm of the neighborhood in the side streets.
One important thing too: down by Pigalle, at the bottom of the hill, it's not the safest area, and there are quite a few pickpockets. Nothing dramatic, but keep an eye on your things, especially at night.
The 11th
The 11th is the cosmopolitan neighborhood par excellence, and clearly one of my favorites for going out. Tons of cool bars, good spots, a real neighborhood life in the evening. This is where Parisians go to grab a drink and party without any fuss.
Less touristy than the center and more authentic, it's perfect if you want to live Paris like a local, especially around Oberkampf and rue Saint Maur for nightlife. Aux Deux Amis is exactly the kind of spot I love around there.
The Left Bank (the 7th and around)
If you're after a quieter Paris, the left bank in the broad sense (the 7th, and parts of the 6th and 5th) is more residential and calm. It's a bit more chic, a bit more hushed, this is where the Parisians with money live.
It's less of a party than le Marais or the 11th, but the setting is stunning: the beautiful buildings, the Jardin du Luxembourg to sit in, the elegant streets around Les Invalides. It's also the area of Le Bon Marché, my favorite department store, calmer and better stocked than the others, with the coffee shop Wani right across the street, one of my big coups de cœur. Perfect for a laid back stay, as a couple or with family, or if you just prefer to sleep somewhere quiet and head to the action whenever you feel like it.
And to Get Off the Beaten Path
If you want something more local, look toward Canal Saint Martin and Belleville. It's younger, more relaxed, with a real café and bar scene. Less postcard, but it's everyday Paris, the one Parisians actually love.
There's no bad choice, really, just different vibes depending on what you're after: calm and chic, partying, the charm of old Paris, or real neighborhood life. And the best part is you can combine several of them on a single trip, they're almost all just a few metro stops apart.
