Paris really earns its nickname, the City of Light, once night falls. The monuments light up, the Seine reflects the glow, the terrasses fill up, and the whole city takes on a different feel. It's my favorite time to enjoy it.
Whether you're after a romantic evening, a good drink or just a beautiful walk, here's how I do Paris at night, with my addresses.
The Eiffel Tower Sparkle
This is THE magic moment of Paris at night, and it's free. Every hour from 8:00pm, for 5 minutes, the Eiffel Tower bursts into thousands of golden lights, from nightfall until 1am. If you only see one thing in the evening, make it this.
To catch it, the best move is to post up at Trocadéro, which has the best head on view, or on the Champ de Mars, feet in the grass. The Pont de Bir Hakeim is another great spot, a little less known. Plan to get there a few minutes before the hour so you don't miss it.
Sunset on the Quais
In summer, my favorite ritual is apéro on the banks of the Seine at sunset. You grab a bottle of rosé, a bit of cheese and charcuterie, and you settle down by the water with friends. It's what every Parisian does the second the weather's nice, and honestly, there's nothing better to start the evening.
The quais around Île Saint Louis and the Pont des Arts are perfect for this. The sky turning pink behind the monuments, the relaxed mood, your feet dangling over the water: it's simply the best of a Parisian summer.
A Walk Along the Lit Up Seine
There's nothing more beautiful than a walk along the Seine once the monuments are lit. Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Pont Alexandre III with its golden lamps, everything glows. Start from Île de la Cité and follow the quais, you'll see Paris at its most beautiful. It's free, romantic, and it's still one of my favorite pleasures, alone or with someone.
Where to Have a Cocktail
For a really good cocktail, I have my addresses. Little Red Door, in the Marais, is regularly ranked among the best bars in the world: dim lighting, a creative menu, you go with your eyes closed to start or end the night well. Bar Nouveau is another of my coups de cœur, more under the radar, the kind of place you like to keep to yourself. And Le Serpent à Plume, on Place des Vosges, is perfect if you want a gorgeous setting to sip a drink in peace.
Wine Bars for Small Plates
If you'd rather have an evening of wine and small plates to share, that's my favorite way to spend a good night with no fuss. L'Attache is one of my go to spots, with a lovely selection and plates that keep coming. Early June is in the same spirit, good wine and something to nibble on in a friendly atmosphere. And Delicatessen rounds out the trio, ideal for a light Italian dinner over a good bottle.
That's the real Parisian night: no need for a fancy restaurant, just good wine, plates to share and good company.
Where to Go Out, by Vibe
If you want to bar hop, the 11th around Oberkampf is the nightlife neighborhood par excellence, young and buzzing. Canal Saint Martin is more laid back and bohemian, perfect for a drink by the water. And over by Pigalle, the area has turned into a trendy spot with tons of cocktail bars, just keep an eye on your things around there.
For a more classic night, jazz lovers will adore Le Caveau de la Huchette, in the Latin Quarter, an institution where people still dance. On the cabaret side, the Moulin Rouge is still legendary, even if it's very touristy and you have to book well ahead.
A Few Practical Things
Keep the last metros in mind: they stop around 12:45am on weekdays, and a bit later on Friday and Saturday, around 1:45am. After that, you've got the Noctilien night buses or an Uber. Paris is generally safe at night, but stay alert in the metro and the busier party areas, and keep your phone and bag close.
Paris at night is a different city, softer and more beautiful. The best thing is to let the evening unfold without planning it too much: a drink here, a walk there. That's often how the best nights happen.
