Le Marais is one of my favorite neighborhoods to wander in Paris. Straddling the 3rd and 4th, it's old Paris at its finest: medieval lanes, gorgeous old mansions, hidden courtyards. It's one of the rare neighborhoods Haussmann never touched, and you can tell, it feels like time stopped here.
But Le Marais isn't just a pretty backdrop. It's also a super lively neighborhood, bobo and very Parisian, full of designer boutiques, great places to eat and bars where you linger late. Here's what to see, and most of all, my favorite spots.
What to See in Le Marais
Start with Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris and probably the prettiest. Its arcades, the patch of green in the middle, the rose colored brick façades: it's perfect for a break. Under the arcades, you can take a peek at the Maison de Victor Hugo, free, where the writer lived.
The neighborhood is packed with museums, and good ones. The Musée Picasso, set in the stunning Hôtel Salé, holds the largest collection of the artist's work in the world. The Musée Carnavalet tells the whole history of Paris, and its permanent collection is free, one of my favorites. And right next door, the Centre Pompidou for modern art, even if the building is a love it or hate it kind of thing (but it’s closed until 2030).
Don't miss rue des Rosiers either, the heart of the historic Jewish quarter, the Pletzl. That's where you eat the famous falafel, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. For a quick bite, swing by the Marché des Enfants Rouges, the oldest covered market in Paris, full of little stalls from all over the world.
But the real joy of Le Marais is just walking with no plan, turning down the lanes, open the doors of shops and courtyards.
My Favorite Cafés
Bingsutt is a Hong Kong coffee shop run by my friend Davina. It's where I discovered the famous Hong Kong milk tea, and I've been hooked ever since. She also makes traditional pastries like egg tarts, everything is amazing.
Recto Verso is very instagrammable, yes, but not only that. The owners are lovely and the coffee is really good. It's become a neighborhood favorite, and you can see why.
And for those with a sweet tooth, Pontochoux makes made to order desserts that are gorgeous. Just one detail: it's closed on Tuesdays, so skip that day.
For a Sweet Treat
For something sweet, head to Christophe Louie: his madeleines are incredible, some of the best I've had in Paris. And when the weather's nice, go to Isotope for homemade ice cream, one of my favorite spots right now.
Where to Eat
Chez L'Ami Louis is an institution, one of those legendary old Parisian bistros. It's generous, it's expensive, but it's an experience worth having at least once. For something more refined, the restaurant Anne, a Michelin starred spot tucked inside Pavillon de la Reine on Place des Vosges, is a beautiful address.
For something more casual, I love Caves Saint Gilles for its tapas in a lively Spanish atmosphere. And for a quick bite you can't go wrong with, ORTO makes really good paninis.
For a Drink
Le Marais also has some great bars. Le Serpent à Plume, on Place des Vosges, is perfect for a glass of wine in a gorgeous setting, and they sometimes have jazz concerts. And for cocktail lovers, Little Red Door is one of the best bars in Paris, regularly ranked among the best in the world. Absolutely worth trying.
Where to Shop
Le Marais is the neighborhood for shopping that's a little different. The one I love is Merci, the iconic concept store with its little red car out front, where you find everything from home decor to fashion, with a nice café inside. For something more refined, Officine Universelle Buly is a gorgeous perfumery and apothecary, almost a museum.
For bags, my two addresses are RSVP and Fleuron, perfect for hunting down beautiful pieces. And you can't skip the Appartement Sézane, the home base of the French brand everyone loves.
Where to Stay in Le Marais
If you want to stay in the neighborhood, I have two addresses. Maison Proust, a luxurious hotel with a hushed, very Parisian feel, perfect for a cozy escape. And Suzie Blue, another nice option to be right in the heart of Le Marais.
The best thing is to take your time, turn down the lanes and stop at a cute shop or a café . That's how you enjoy Le Marais best.
