If Montmartre is the best known village in Paris, Belleville is its secret side, the one tourists almost always miss. It's a lively, multicultural neighborhood perched on a hill in northeast Paris, with a real village soul and one of the most beautiful views over the city. It's also the street art capital of Paris. It's honestly one of my favorite corners for showing the Paris that actually lives and breathes.
A Real Village, Still Working Class
Like Montmartre, Belleville was an independent village, joined to Paris only in 1860. It has kept that identity apart, with its sloping lanes and little houses that contrast with the grand Haussmann boulevards. It has always been a neighborhood of immigration, where the Chinese and North African communities cross paths with many others, which makes it one of the liveliest and most delicious corners of Paris. Legend has it that Édith Piaf was born on the steps of the Rue de Belleville, and a plaque still marks the spot. Today it's mostly artists who make the neighborhood's heart beat, with dozens of studios hidden all over.
The Street Art Capital
If you love street art, Belleville is the neighborhood for you. The walls are covered in murals and paste ups that change all the time, to the point where the neighborhood has become an open air museum. The heart of it all is the Rue Dénoyez, a legendary little street entirely covered in paintings, repainted endlessly by the artists. But wander through the streets around it and you'll find work on every corner. It's free, alive, and it gives the neighborhood an energy you won't find anywhere else in Paris.

And then there's the view. The Parc de Belleville, laid out in terraces on the side of the hill, offers one of the finest panoramas in the city, with the Eiffel Tower poking up in the distance. It's the high point of the area, far less known than Montmartre, and so much quieter. I love going up at the end of the day for the sunset, with a little bottle and something to nibble on. You watch all of Paris light up, without the crowds, and it's a moment I recommend to everyone.
The Real Paris, Far from the Postcards
What I love about Belleville is that nothing is done for tourists. You'll find corner cafés, natural wine bars, canteens from every country and busy markets, all frequented by the people who actually live there. It's less pretty at first glance than postcard Paris, but it's infinitely more alive and more real. If you want to feel the Paris of today, the one that moves and reinvents itself, this is where to come.
